How do you prepare yourself to translate a complex story like Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward? Are there any sorts of mental checks you make for yourself while working?

The best preparation for a game like this is to know the whole game in and out. A 100% play through and checking for any possible areas where a plot that shows up later in the game can affect the localization in the beginning. Hidden “hints” that Uchikoshi plots, and effectively spotting what it is that he’s trying to “show.” I also look for challenges in terms of localization such as Uchikoshi’s favorite puns or cultural jokes he would throw in. To what extent can it be “sacrificed” and which ones you have to portray. I will look for a possible U.S. equivalent and then portray that verbally to my editor.
